For the second day of competition the obedience judge was Mr. Kenneth F. Nagler. The obedience ring tested the focus of a few of the dogs as many more breed exhibitors began setting up and grooming their dogs in the immediate vicinity of the obedience ring. The noise level (dryers) and activity level rose dramatically in the area around the ring. Still it was wonderful having the obedience competition set up right in the middle of things. This led to the largest number of spectators ever being able to watch the dogs compete. The crowd watching at ringside enthusiastically applauded each team’s efforts. Some dogs just missed scoring very high on the tests. The Open B dog that missed a qualifying score only one of the individual exercises today performed all of the individual exercises perfectly on Wednesday, but then went "down" on the "long sit" group exercise and thus did not qualify. Many of the dogs that competed are to be commended not only on their concentration but also on their stamina, since they had already competed in the herding and agility competitions on Monday, as well as the obedience competition on Tuesday. What a multi-talented group of OES competed. And did you notice how many of the obedience dogs also have the title “Champion” before their name in addition?

Obedience High in Trial – Wednesday, September 21 went once again went to Brightcut Lewis and Clark, HT, RE, owner/handler: Maureen Clark with a score of 196.5+ from the Novice B class. This time “Louie” had to win a “run-off” against Michelle Redfern's rescue girl, It's a Mad Mattie World (196.5) in order to claim High In Trial. “Louie” a two-year-old male, also did well in the herding competition held on Monday. Louis was also the first OES to earn an AKC Rally title (RN) and is the first OES to title at each level up through Rally Excellent (RE) level.
We were sorry that OESCA member Sandra Tansil, whose home on the Gulf Coast was severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina last month, was unable to attend and exhibit her dogs in the competition this year. Your presence was missed, Sandy!
The Old English Sheepdog Club of America presents annually at its National Specialty five prestigious "Performance Awards" at the Top Twenty Event. They are given to honor the OESCA-member owned OES attaining the top AKC Trial level titles in Obedience, Agility, Herding, Tracking and Versatility within the previous calendar year. If more than one OES has attained the top title in each of these categories, then the OES with the highest average score in the qualifying legs will receive the award.
Three of these awards were won by the same dog, Brooke, VCD, VCD2, CGC, CD, CDX, UD, UDX, TD, HT, PT, JHD, HC-1, NA, NAJ, OA, OAJ, AX, AXJ, NAP, NJP, TDI, RN. This long string of titles includes versatility, obedience, herding, tracking, agility, rally and certified therapy dog.
"Brooke" is a ten and a half year old bitch owned, trained and handled by Marjorie Trebino of California. Brooke received awards for:
The Top Old English Sheepdog in Obedience - 2004
The Top Old English Sheepdog in Tracking - 2004 (tie)
The Top Old English Sheepdog in Versatility - 2004
Brooke is an extraordinary performance dog who loves to work. She received her UD award in three shows with three First Places and just recently completed her Open Jumpers Preferred title in Agility and her Novice Rally title.
The Top Old English Sheepdog Award in Tracking - 2004 (tie) went to CH Londonaire's Rare Bear, CGC, CD, CDX, HT, PT, HJD, HSa, TD, NA, NAJ, OA, OAJ, AXJ, NGC, NJC, NAP, NJP, OAP, VCD, VCD2, TDI, OESCA Versatility Award. Bear is a nine year old male. His many titles also come from a mix of obedience, herding, agility, Versatility and OESCA Versatility awards. He is also a Champion and a registered Therapy Dog. Bear is owned by Marjorie and Charles Trebino & Karen Stetler and trained and shown by Marjorie.

Top Old English Sheepdog Award in Agility-2004 went to Dreamweaver's Drum of Destiny, CD, MX, MXJ, PT, CGC, OESCA Versatility Dog, a seven year old bitch. Her titles include obedience, agility herding and the Versatility Award from OESCA. Thumbellina, as she is called, prefers competing in agility above all, according to her owner, Barbara Diaz. Her performance ability runs in the family. Her dam, her littermate and two half siblings have all earned the OESCA Versatility Dog Award. Thumbellina is owned, trained and shown by Barbara Diaz.

The Top Old English Sheepdog Award in Herding - 2004 was awarded to Summerwinds Simply Irisistable, HXAs, a bitch owned by Dawn Joyce, Marta Meador and Kathy Menshew.
All of the above dogs with the exception of the Herding Award were present at the Top Twenty Gala to receive their Certificate of Achievement and their gorgeous Rosette and to take a "victory lap" around the ballroom to the applause of the audience in recognition of their achievements.

We gratefully acknowledge the efforts of the hard working Chairs of the OESCA Performance events this year: Linda Roeschmann, Agility Chair; Jim Caplan, Herding Chair; and Laurie McCain, Obedience Chair. Laurie also performed double duty as she most ably stepped in to run the Herding when Jim was unexpectedly required to be on the west coast just days prior to the event.

We all look forward to another terrific gathering at the OESCA National in Virginia in 2006. In addition to Herding, Agility & Obedience, a Rally competition will be offered for the very first time, so start training now as we hope to see you there.
