Interview with Birgitte Schjoth
(kennel DANISH DELIGHT) - Denmark

How did the first bobtail appear in your life? Why was it exactly a bobtail? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
We used to have Collies, later Golden Retrievers in my family, but I always wanted an OES for myself, when I became old enough to decide and had anough money to by it - at that time quitе expensive my father thought.
Back in 1969 I spend 6 month in England working in a quarentine kennel. And gues what: all my sparetime was spend visiting kennels and going to Shows to look at those wonderful dogs called Ole English Sheepdog. I fell in love with the breed because of the appearance and the loving temperament. Allways liked cuddly-bears...
Anyway when I returned to Denmark to study my companion was a OES puppy bought in Wales. She later became the foundation bitch of my kennel.

Why is your kennel called just so? How did you choose the name for it?
Well I wanted a name with relations to my country, something that sounded friendly and happy, so when my aunt came up with the suggestion DANISH DELIGHT I immidiately accepted.

Where do your dogs live?
All over the house included the bed. As we have five dogs at the moment the oldest being 12,5 Years old, we have changed a little. That is solely because of old Sophie, and she is now the only one allowed in the bed, which suites both her (and us) quite well.

Do you have assistants in the kennel? What is their task?
No, we mannage ourselves, but would love to have someone coming inn to clean the house, but so far.

What kind of breeding dogs, in your opinion, should be:
- male,
- bitch.
It is compulsitory that they are sound and well functionally, for us they also must be good-looking and above all with good movements. Although we don't use them as hearding dogs any more, they should still be able to do a full days work.

What do you emphasize in the breeding?
As said type and movement.

Was there a litter which remained in your heart and which you are especially proud of?
There are several, to mention some I would say my second litter which included the top winning bitch for many Years Ch. Audrey and then Sophies first and second litter which included a lot of Champions.

How important is the eye pigment?
Well it gives a much nicer expression with a full pigmented eye, but more important is the eye-colour. I defiantly do not like a light borwn/yellow eye.

Are the champion's titles obligatory for dogs' breeding?
Oh no, but the dogs I have in the house should carry a Title - or I have chosen wrong when they were puppies.

What do you do with a dog which gets too old for breeding?
Try to give it as happy an old-life as possible with us.

What is the happiest moment in your life concerning bobtail?
The daily life at home.

Did you experience misfortunes and how did you avoid them?
Not really, nothing seriously at least. I avoid them by checking anything possible before I breed.

What criteria do you use to choose the best puppy in the litter?
I look at the way the pup is build.

What forage do you feed your puppies and adult dogs with? Do you give them additional forage and what kind of?
We feed Hill`s Sciens Plan Puppies Large Breed till one year, then Adult till 7 Years then Hill`s Prescription Diet B/D for the oldies. No additives!

Do you do make selection among the future owners of the puppies from your nursery? What can be a reason to refuse to sell a puppy to a particular person?
Oh yes, you have too. There can be people you feel can't cope with an OES or doesn't have the time and energy, people then should have a cat not a dog that needs a lot of exercise and grooming, or people you simply dislike.

The dog breeding for you is:
- your life;
- a hobby;
- an art;
- a way to earn you living?
The dog breeding is for me a hobby and an art.

Could you give a piece of advice to a beginner breeders?
Be prepared to learn all your life, when working with animal breeding you always should be prepared to meet something unexpected. Serious dog breeding cost a lot of money.

What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in the World and your country for the last 15 years?
Too many new comers do not have an eye for a good dog, they look at titels, people they like or dislike, too many breed to the nearest male or the male from a friend. We are responsible for the breed in the future, not just our own few dogs. The result of that can be seen in the breed and the owerall quality has gone down during the last few Years.

Breed clubs. Are they necessary in your country? Why?
Breed Clubs are very nessasary for the Breed, where else should people meet. in Denmark we have a very well functionally Club.
The Danish Kennel Club demands that any breed is connected to a Specialty Club, but the OES could be in a club with other breeds - only we have chosen back in 1965 to have a Club just for the OES.

What is an exhibition for you?
An exhibition is for me a "window" for the breed. Here you can see your own breeding together with others and compare, make new planning for future breeding etc. It is always a good idea to visit an exhibition without your own dogs participating now and then. Exhibitions are also for me competition with my own dogs, and yes it is fun to win, and to learn that you have done a good breeding-job.

Beginning from what age should a dog start being prepared for a show-career? What is the best way to do it?
Right from the time the pup can stand on all four legs. First it can simply learn to stand still on a table, later on the ground, then on a lead. Things are so much earsier when you beginn with the puppy.

What of your dogs did perform most successfully at the exhibitions?
*DK Ch.WW77 Audrey - Top Winner in Denmark for many Years, World Winner Denmark 1977
*DK Ch. WW85 Danish Delight Call Me Barbara - World Winner Holland 1985
*DK S VDH D INT Ch. Lamedazottel Go Miss Sophie - top winner Denmark several times and also top brood bitch
*DK S N NORD VDH INT Ch. Danish Delight Sophies Dutch Joker - Winner og theEuro-OES-Show in Beureuth (owned by the late Liv Backe)
*DK S N NORD Ch. Danish Delight Sophies Billie Jean - top winner in Denmark several times
* to mention some

What is your attitude toward professional handling? Do you use services of professional handlers?
We don't have professional handling in Denmark, and I hate the politics that goes with dog Showing and that are also connected to professional handling.

Please let us know your attitude to usage of lacquers during the dog's preparation for an exhibition?
It dosn't realy disturbe me, everybody can recognise a bad coat that needs lacquer, and should penalise the quality of the coat. Presentation though are of the utmost importance now a days, and I am afraid we can not do anything about it.

Would you like to wish something to the Russian OES owners.
The very best of luck.
