Interview with Eef ter Mors
(kennel VIGILAT`S) - Netherlands

How did the first bobtail appear in your life? Why was it exactly a bobtail? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
1977 I visite Late Mrs. Backx Bennink to buy a Schapendoes (a dutch breed) I knoiw everything about that breed. Mrs. Benninck said to me. That dog is also for sale and she pointed at a 5 months old bobtail. At the same moment we fell in love and we went home with Reeuwijk's Dear Tom Todd. Part of the deal was that she wants me to go a dog show with him. And that the way it started. Two years later she offered me a bitch. She give me the choice between Ch. Reeuwijk's Filmstar in Silver and Reeuwijk's Fabulous lady. I choose Lady.
In that time I was in the hospital for 3 weeks and Mrs Backx brings me a lot of books about breeding and after that …..

Why is your kennel called just so? How did you choose the name for it?
A kennel name must have something to do with the owner. I have worked 40 years at the police and on the cap the was a saying "vigilat ut quiscant". This is Latin and means : "We are watching while you are sleeping".

Where do your dogs live?
In my home. I have tried to do my dogs in a kennel but we are not the people for that kind of dog holding.

Do you have assistants in the kennel? What is their task?
I do everything myself.

What kind of breeding dogs, in your opinion, should be:
- male,
- bitch.
First of all. A good overall health and character. Then a good build dog. Every one can breed good dogs but to breed a real top dog is mostly a matter of luck. Top or not has to do with the radiation of a dog. That is something elusive. Rule number 1 is "Never put two faults together.

What do you emphasize in the breeding?
Type. "My type". Everyone has his own type although they all fit in the same breed standard.

Was there a litter which remained in your heart and which you are especially proud of?
My "W"-litter (Wicked Lady, Woody Allen, Wish me Happy) and My "D"-litter (Dropshot, Different Yip).

How important is the eye pigment?
It is just a breeding point. For breeding not so very important. (see 5) It is important for the show because every judge (capable or not) can see that there is no pigmentation.

Are the champion's titles obligatory for dogs' breeding?
To be honest…. Titles have nothing to do with breeding. A show is a show. I mean a real show.

What do you do with a dog which gets too old for breeding?
Stay with me of course. For me a silly question.

What is the happiest moment in your life concerning bobtail?
There a every day happy moments. At this moment a have a pup in my home who is growing up. So every every day is party!

Did you experience misfortunes and how did you avoid them?
I never experience with breeding. The risk is to big for the born puppies.

What criteria do you use to choose the best puppy in the litter?
If type, health and character is ok, then I look for things that are important for show as well. As I said a show is just a show but I like showing with my dogs although I know that the winner is mostly not the best dog.
Most of all I choose my puppy when they are just born. With 6 weeks I am very hesitating and with 10 weeks I know I have made the right choice. (Sometimes I discovered that I had make the wrong choice at 1 year).

What forage do you feed your puppies and adult dogs with? Do you give them additional forage and what kind of?
There is a lot wrong in dog food industry. They have food for puppies, for grown up, high energy etc. That is nonsense. Every dog in nature eats the same. If he works more He have to eat more or less. I give my dogs regular food (crocs) and ones a week a day with only meat.

Do you do make selection among the future owners of the puppies from your nursery? What can be a reason to refuse to sell a puppy to a particular person?
I started to make selections and I was regularly disappointed. People get divorced, are not what they seems to be, etc. etc. 'Now I tell every one what the consequences are for having a bobtail and show them pictures of very dirty bobtails that comes out of the water and so on.

The dog breeding for you is:
- your life;
- a hobby;
- an art;
- a way to earn you living?
It's a hobby but it seems like work. Now I am retired it is a way of living I can't imaging a live without bobtails.

Could you give a piece of advice to a beginner breeders?
Look for an experienced breeder (who you trust) and try to learn as much as you can. But first of love the breed with whole your heart then you don't make big mistakes.

What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in the World and your country for the last 15 years?
Breeding goes up and down. There are good breeders and there are breeding factories and there are "hobby" breeders. But I think in general positive.

Breed clubs. Are they necessary in your country? Why?
For breeders the clubs are necessary for share information and make together rules for breeding. For lovers it is nice to be member of the club for walking or playing or to do other nice things with the dogs.

What is an exhibition for you?
A show and I love it but as I say, It have not so much to do with breeding.

Beginning from what age should a dog start being prepared for a show-career? What is the best way to do it?
The day they are born. Not that of course but very soon. I started brushing with 8 weeks every day a few minutes and after that they have to stay for a few seconds. With 4 a 5 moths a started to learn them (show) walking on a line. (The movement at a show is not a natural movement. Imaging that a dog walks a whole day that way with the sheeps!)

What of your dogs did perform most successfully at the exhibitions?
Successfully showing depends for 50% at the handler and for 50% at the dog. A good coat and a good movement is essential for the show.

What is your attitude toward professional handling? Do you use services of professional handlers?
I do everything myself because I like it very much. As I say for success in showing is handling very important. Some have the talent, others not. So If one can effort a professional handler, it ok with me but …… I never give my dog to a professional unless I know him/her very well and know that he loves my dogs just way as I do.

Please let us know your attitude to usage of lacquers during the dog's preparation for an exhibition?
I
t is a beauty contest and it is a show. I don't need hairspray because that is a disaster for the dog nose. Further I have no problems with preparing the dogs. The "border" is there when people use color sprays and that sort of things. Then it is deceit.

Would you like to wish something to the Russian OES owners?
Love your dogs as you love your wife and children !!!!!! and if you have any question…. You know my address.
