Interview with Birte Fromberg & Jorgen Brieghel
(kennel BLUE BERRY) - Denmark

How did the first bobtail appear in your life? Why was it exactly a bobtail? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
We bought our first OES back in 1978. Krojerups Emilie, called Mille. We had had a labrador dog before and wanted something different - so it became an OES bitch ! We showed Mille as puppy under Mrs.Jean Gould, Rollingsea Kennels, and that became the start of a friendship with Jean Gould, who taught me to love and respect the breed. Please see our homepage about how we started our kennel and our memory page of Jean Gould.

Why is your kennel called just so? How did you choose the name for it?
Mille was not a showdog, so we bought a puppy from Danish Delight called Blue Berry. She didn't became a showdog either, but she was a very lovely bitch and we gave our kennel her name.

Where do your dogs live?
To day we have 4 dogs and they all live like familydogs in our home. Are we in the kitchen, they will all be there as well, and so in the garden, in the sittingroom etc. In the night we have all dogs in our sleeping room, and only in season we have to seperate them.

Do you have assistants in the kennel? What is their task?
We don`t have assistants in the kennel.

What kind of breeding dogs, in your opinion, should be:
- male,
- bitch.
We have the same demand for males and bitches when breeding. The temperament, the type and health should be good. The bitch should be femine and the dog maskuline.

What do you emphasize in the breeding?
As they are sold as family dogs, it is very, very important that they have a super temperament - but of course still look like an OES!

Was there a litter which remained in your heart and which you are especially proud of?
Our D-litter from where we got our first and only homebreed Champion.

How important is the eye pigment?
Specially if the eye is blue, the pigmentation is a must.

Are the champion's titles obligatory for dogs' breeding?
No, not in Denmark.

What do you do with a dog which gets too old for breeding?
As we have our dogs as familydogs, we keep them and love them until the sad day, where we must say Good by.

What is the happiest moment in your life concerning bobtail?
Everytime a new puppy is born, I feel happy. But of course I also was happy, the day many years ago, where Blue Berry's Daddy's Darling was best puppy in show, and her father was best in breed an later best in show. Her father was our dog Ch. Rollingsea Admiral Keegan.

Did you experience misfortunes and how did you avoid them?
When breeding we all sometimes get an unexpected problem, and if heriditary it is importen to be honest about the problem and to talk with other breeders about it, so that we can avoid it in the future. We always have contact with the people, who have bought a puppy from us, in all the dogs life, and we try to help as much as possible. In this way we allso know about the dogs behavior and their health.

What criteria do you use to choose the best puppy in the litter?
When you ask for the "best" puppy, I would ask for what ? If it is the best show-puppy ,it should be so closse to the standard as possibly and very outstanding or eyecatching. The best puppy for a special family is the one, who have the temperament that compare with the family, and for that we use a puppy-mental-test. See our homepage!

What forage do you feed your puppies and adult dogs with? Do you give them additional forage and what kind of?
We feed with a dry dog food named Regal. There are a special for puppies, a special for pregnant bitches, a special for dogs with skin problems, a special for adult dogs and a special for old dogs. I always add extra C and E vitamins and a little garlick.

Do you do make selection among the future owners of the puppies from your nursery? What can be a reason to refuse to sell a puppy to a particular person?
Last time we had puppies we had a lot of interested families but only 7 puppies, so we asked them all to come and wisit us before the puppies were born, and from our dogs reactions and the families reaction on our dogs, we got the feeling who was the best families for our puppies ! We allways tell and show how much dirt the dog brings into the home, how long time you have to groom the dog, and how long time it is nessesary to be together with a puppy. When buying a puppy from us, the new owner has to sign a paper, saying that the dog must not change home without our accept, when breeding from it, they have to follow the clubs rules about breeding : X-rayed A or B, eyetested for PRA and cataract, shown at least once with a red or blue ribbon, and the bitch should be over 20 month old.

The dog breeding for you is:
- your life;
- a hobby;
- an art;
- a way to earn you living?
OES is for us a lifestyle.

Could you give a piece of advice to a beginner breeders?
First of all it is necessary to have a good bitch and to find the right stud dog compared to the standard! Time is necessary too, as it is very importen to give the puppies the best start by having contact with them most of the day and to start housetraining. You also have to use a lot of time to find good homes for the puppies. Money. It costs a lot to use the right studdog and to bring up a litter, and a lot of things can happen from mating the bitch untill the puppies are 8-10 weeks old, and ready for their new homes.

What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in the World and your country for the last 15 years?
Breeders are working more together, and are more open about breedingproblems. It is much easier to use a studdog from another country - to send frozen seemen - or to buy a puppy to get new blood to the breed.

Breed clubs. Are they necessary in your country? Why?
Breed clubs is a very, very good thing for the breed. It can get the breeders in contact, and it can bring the families together, so they learn to love not only their dog but the breed as a whole. We in Denmark have a very active club with a lot of arrangements for the members, such as groomingdays, obedience, agility, weekends for fun, show-training,breeders-meetings etc. We have a magazine published every second month and we have a library with a lot of books about OES and dogs - and also about breeding. We also have a homepage, but it needs a more frequently up-dating routine in my oppinion.

What is an exhibition for you?
An exhibition is a place where I can come and look for a new studdog and for new breed-combinations. That is for me more important than what the judge is doing.

Beginning from what age should a dog start being prepared for a show-career? What is the best way to do it?
If you know that your puppy is going to be shown, it is very important to start very early to learn the puppy to stay right and to run in the right way, and to praise the puppy for standing and running well, so that it is a happy puppy in the ring.

What of your dogs did perform most successfully at the exhibitions?
Ch. Rollingsea Admilal Keegan was a really good showdog, and he really loved to be in the showring.

What is your attitude toward professional handling? Do you use services of professional handlers?
For me a show is (or can be) important for breeding, and a professional handler cannot make the dog to be better for breeding, so I don't understand people who use lots of money only for having a winning dog! I would newer use a professional handler!

Please let us know your attitude to usage of lacquers during the dog's preparation for an exhibition?
In our rules for showing we are not alloved to use anything.

Would you like to wish something to the Russian OES owners?
At the EURO-show I saw the dancing OES - and I liked what I saw. To work with the dogs is very important. The OES is a working breed who likes to do obedience, agility etc. It is a very beautyfull dog too, when groomed and kept in good condition, and as so it likes to be shown too.
It is my hope for the Russian OES owners, that they will love their dogs, love the breed and have respect for its history, and give this on to new owners of the breed.
