Interview with Annette and Siglinde Kirsch
(kennel from BEAUTIFUL HIGHLAND - Germany)

How did the first bobtail appear in your life? Why was it exactly a bobtail? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
The first OES we saw was a male on a dog school. It was the love of our life! Some month later there was a burglary near us and my parents thaught that it could be a good idea to have a dog. So our first OES came in 1977. She called Wuschel. A lovely bitch, but we are so sad that we made so a lot of mistakes. Unfortunately she is died in 1980, because of a vet's mistake. With Christina Bailey's help we had the big chance to get Woodlane's Elliot from Belgium. With him we started our show career. After a long and hard way to learn the success begun.

Why is your kennel called just so? How did you choose the name for it?
When we started, for us the Highlands were typical for U.K. So we found our kennel "from Beautiful Highland".

Where do your dogs live?
Our dogs live together with us. There, where you can meet us, you will find our dogs, too.

Do you have assistants in the kennel? What is their task?
Perhaps my father who is our dogsitter when we are on show with some of our dogs.

What kind of breeding dogs, in your opinion, should be:
- male,
- bitch.
I think there isn't any difference. The most important thing is a high quality. You get the real quality only when the parents have a big quality.

What do you emphasize in the breeding?
For us the most important destination is to get the typical OES character with health and beauty!

Was there a litter which remained in your heart and which you are especially proud of?
In 17 years we had only 8 litters, but we think every time when you have a litter you love him so much. Every puppy is an own personality.

How important is the eye pigment?
Eye pigmentation is beautiful, but no problem when it is missing.

Are the champion's titles obligatory for dogs' breeding?
A dog can have a high quality without a Champion title. And you don't get a Champion only out of a Champion or not every Champion produce Champions, too.

What do you do with a dog which gets too old for breeding?
How we said (Nr. 3), our dogs are members of our family. We live together until the end of their life.

What is the happiest moment in your life concerning bobtail?
There are too much happy moments in our life with dogs. Show successes are wonderful, but not the only thing in our life.

Did you experience misfortunes and how did you avoid them?
The only misfortune was the terrible illness of our Sugar Bear from Beautiful Highland (Gaylord) in the age of 9 years. Two years later we lost our fight against the Aspergillosis.

What criteria do you use to choose the best puppy in the litter?
Our feeling is very important.

What forage do you feed your puppies and adult dogs with? Do you give them additional forage and what kind of?
We think it's very important when you give dry food, but also meat, vegetables, cheese, milk and cereals.

Do you do make selection among the future owners of the puppies from your nursery? What can be a reason to refuse to sell a puppy to a particular person?
The most important reason for buy a puppy is that it will be a member of the new family. If the new owner like to show, it is good for us, but we must be sure that it never will be a problem when it isn't possible to show or breed with.

The dog breeding for you is:
- your life;
- a hobby;
- an art;
- a way to earn you living?
Dog breeding for us: the best way to get an OES developed from our vision.

Could you give a piece of advice to a beginner breeders?
Important is your vision of our beautiful breed. To breed isn't a way to get money.

What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in the World and your country for the last 15 years?
In the last 15 years it was a constantly up and down in the whole OES world. In Germany the quality is developed back, especially in the last years. We think it is the judge's job to control the development and if possible to direct it in the right way. But a good judge need a big know-how in breeding our OES.

Breed clubs. Are they necessary in your country? Why?
You need Breed Clubs for the control of the breeders, for have a certain standard in breeding. Normaly it could be good for new dog lovers and owners, but mostly, it isn't the case.

What is an exhibition for you?
Exhibition for us, that means:
- our biggest hobby
- the only real possibility to control our own breed
- the possibility to get friends on the whole world

Beginning from what age should a dog start being prepared for a show-career? What is the best way to do it?
It's different. Sometimes you have got a dog who needs a lot of time, then it's better to wait. We start with the first units some weeks before the first show. It can bee good when you go with a young dog to some shows without to show him. Movement and expression.

What is your attitude toward professional handling? Do you use services of professional handlers?
To show our dogs, that's our love. So we don't need any professional handler.

Please let us know your attitude to usage of lacquers during the dog's preparation for an exhibition?
We never used any laquers for our dogs. Sure, it's very easy to handle a dog with some laquers in the coat. And in the most cases, it's always this dog on the first place.

Would you like to wish something to the Russian OES owners?
We wish our Russian friends that their enthusiasm never will go away. It's always very hard to keep the right way. It's difficult to start, but it is more difficult to keep a high level!
