Interview with Georgina Varga
(kennel SILVER WHIRLWIND - Hungary)

How did the first bobtail appear in your life? Why was it exactly a bobtail? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
Actually, it was accidental. I grew up among dogs; my parents bred Hungarian Pointers (Magyar vizsla). When the "Big He" passed to the eternal hunting fields, the family agreed, that we will not have vizsla anymore (of course later we had again).

But his position should have been filled urgently, because "you can live without a dog, but for what reason…". We all agreed also that it should be a male.
Then we went to visit our friends. We parked our car. From the car parking beside ours a fur ball was looking at me – it was all over for me: love at first sight. After a quick inquiry we learned, just happened a dog sale on the Marcibanyi Square in Budapest. And the marvelous fur ball is actually a female. It was clear for me that a dog sale is exactly the place, where one should not buy any kind of dog, but after a short hesitation I decided, our visit must be postponed, because I want this – and only this – small fur ball. The young lady conquered the whole family with no resistance, since then she has a huge number of fans. She is a real PERSONALITY.
Because of Amyka (that’s her name) we fell in love with the breed, and decided we will start to breed Bobtails. It was obvious that Amyka is not a good subject to start with.

Tintin - Call it Destiny by Silver Whirlwind

Because of the arrival of the "brother" was preceded by a long careful planning. The result of all this planning was the arrival to Budapest of Lamedazottel Quicksilver with a British Airways flight on the April the 7th 1995. Silver was born in one of the most famous Bobtail kennel on the world. After reading his pedigree we weren’t sure how we should address our new pup, who has "royal blood" in his veins. . . As a show dog he also proved our hopes, whereas his hopeful career was shaded by a serious accident. In a car accident he was seriously injured, and despite all the efforts of our veterinarians he did not recover completely and because of this Silver’s career as a show dog could have been as excellent as everybody have expected, but the results he achieved we are very proud.
In the Junior Class he became Junior Club Winner, Junior Best in Show, JUNIOR EUROPEAN WINNER, and Junior Luxembourg Champion. Following the accident he became 4 time CAC, resCAC, Club Winner, Best of Breed, and HCH (Hungarian Champion).

Silver - Ch. Lamedazottel Quicksilver

We were planning Silver’s come back this year in the show rings. On January the 28th 2001 he was seven years old and since he loves shows, we thought we might enter him in veteran class couple of times… So Silver went Veteran Best in Specialty Show at our Clubshow and reserve Best Veteran in Show at the Grand Prix CACIB Show in Budapest…
Why is your kennel called just so? How did you choose the name for it?
Of course the name has his own story. Silver is our first show dog, and her daughter, our first show bitch is a very temperamental lady, like a Whirlwind. So we chose the name Silver Whirlwind.

Where do your dogs live?
They live with us in the house.

Kennellogo

Do you have assistants in the kennel? What is their task?
No, we don’t have assistants.

What kind of breeding dogs, in your opinion, should be:
- male,
- bitch.
The dog and also the bitch must be high quality, without significant anatomical faults. The bitch must be feminine – and the dog must be masculine. I don’t believe in breeding with poor quality dogs. The temperament must be OK – I don’t like aggressive bobtails. And of course, a breeding dog must be healthy and in top condition.

What do you emphasize in the breeding?
Breeding is a big responsibility. I think, you can love your dog and also the breed without breeding. If you decided to breed, you must try your best.

Was there a litter which remained in your heart and which you are especially proud of?

I think all litter is an amazing wonder. I bred only 3 litters – and I’m very proud of them all. In all my litters I have top winning dogs, with they we had great moments in the show ring. Baby BIS, Puppy BIS, Junior BOG, Junior BIS, BOG, resBOG and the many other titles are the trophies of the success. But I’m very proud, because all our dogs are much loved family member, and the new owners are in contact with us and tell us the happy and sometimes also the not so happy moments of the life of our little darlings.

How important is the eye pigment?
I’m lucky to have 7 dog at home with full pigmentation and the pups in all my litter have full pigmentation. It looks better, if the dog has pigment. But it isn’t the most important point in the standard.

Are the champion's titles obligatory for dogs' breeding?
I strongly believe that a dog’s value is determined by – from the breed’s point of view – not his/her show results, but rather by the quality of his/her descendants. A show is just a show. I know numerous very successful show dogs, and they are poor quality producers. And I know dogs, they never gained a champion title but they have super quality puppies.

What do you do with a dog which gets too old for breeding?
Our dogs are for us family members. They stay with us as long as they live.

I have so many happy and unforgettable moments. The legendary love at first sight with my first OES, Amy. The arrival of Silver. Silver’s Junior BIS in Germany. His win in Luxembourg at the Eurodogshow in the Junior Class. Geneva, Eurodogshow, and Dia’s fantastic success: Junior European Winner & Best Junior, Hanna’s first show – and her Best Puppy in Show title, The birth of our litter. Did you experience misfortunes and how did you avoid them?
I think, in the life you have ups and downs. Also in the life with dogs you have misfortunes. Silver’s accident was a great blow to us. Our Pötyi is also seriously ill. And we lost Dia’s last litter. My advice: try your best and never give up the fight. It is hard, sometimes it hurts and breaks your heart, but you have to go your way.

What criteria do you use to choose the best puppy in the litter?
It is a hard question. Before planning my litters I went to see the pups of my friends and I always asked thousand questions. And I am also tired to see what happened with my „favorite” pup. I trained my eye. By my dogs it was always a love at the first sight. I try to see the pups after the birth, than I have my favorites. I watch the pups as often as I can – to see the movement, the proportions, the coat and of course the temperament. When these points are all right, the pup must have this little bit extra.

What forage do you feed your puppies and adult dogs with? Do you give them additional forage and what kind of?
I use Royal Canin dog food. My Pötyi and my Amy have a special diet – Pötyi has a liver problem, so he eats a dog food, which is in low protein. Amy has a protein allergy, so she is having also a special dietary food (Hill’s D/D). My bitches eat before whelping and during the lactation period Starter – the puppy food of Royal Canin. I feed for my pups also Starter, and after 10 – 12 weeks I don’t feed puppy or junior food – I think the protein level is too high, so I feed a regular adult food with maximum 24% protein. I always try to give my dogs fruits and vegetables, they usually like it. For the coat they regularly get yeast tablets, and also olive oil. For my show dogs I feed also Vitagroom oil from Mr. Groom (USA).

Do you do make selection among the future owners of the puppies from your nursery? What can be a reason to refuse to sell a puppy to a particular person?
I always ask the people to visit us and the pups – and I try to recognize the personality. If Silver or me don’t like the people, they never get a pup.

The dog breeding for you is:
- your life;
- a hobby;
- an art;
- a way to earn you living?
Breeding is my way of life. It began like a hobby, but at the moment it is more than just a hobby.

Could you give a piece of advice to a beginner breeders?
Breed only with high quality dogs. Buy an excellent quality bitch, I think, the bitch is more important in the breeding than the male. Try to find a coach - a breeder with experience and lovely dogs – and watch and ask and study. Be not sightless and be able to see the faults of your own dog. Because if you know these faults, than you can try to correct it.

What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in the World and your country for the last 15 years?
My oldest bobtail is just 10 years old… Ask me 5 years later...

Breed clubs. Are they necessary in your country? Why?
YES!!!! We have to teach those who just want to start breeding, and we have to try to solve the emerging problems together.

What is an exhibition for you?
It is a great opportunity to meet other crazy people – because who owns a show bobtail, is simply crazy… It is also a good opportunity to see where are others, how many and what quality pups born, how a dog or a bitch can pass its genes, and last but not least to choose a possible breeding partner and of course learning. How the other breeders do it…

Beginning from what age should a dog start being prepared for a show-career? What is the best way to do it?
In the age of just a few weeks I start to groom the pups, and after grooming I make them stand for a few minutes. By the time they leave us they already know how to stand according to the standard. During play, if the pups come to me I also make them stand according to the show standard. If our friends visit us I also practice the show ring position with them and I ask my friends to run their hands all over the pups. We begin the leash training at the age of three four months of age. First playfully we go where the pup wants to go. When the pup gains confidence on the leash I start to make him/her go where I want. Then we are going for a walk with an older dog. If the pup goes on leash without problems we start the ring training. I like to take the dogs to dog show as early age as it is possible. If they get used to the stress, noise strange smells of an exhibition, later it will be much easier for them.

What of your dogs did perform most successfully at the exhibitions?
Actually with the exception of Amy all of my dogs are successful on dog shows. Our first great success was Silver’s Junior Club Winner and Junior BIS title at Ann Esposito (Dalewood OES, GB). Later came his Junior Europe Winner title at Norman Harrison (Fernville OES). Then he collected his Club Winner title after his accident from Sue Goddard (Oakfarm OES, GB). Dia won her Junior Europe Winner and Best Junior titles from Barbara Muller (Pennylane OES). Hanna’s unforgettable entry in the show ring (CACIB show’s Best Puppy in Show). Then came a double Junior Club Winner titles – Potyi and Pihecske – and also Potyike’s Junior BIS title. Popey achieved at the age of 13 months HPJ + BOB + Junior BOG, resBOG, Junior resBIS titles.

What is your attitude toward professional handling? Do you use services of professional handlers?
A good handling is already a half win. I know dogs, which in his owner hand only an average excellent, but with a good handling it became one of the most successful dogs in Europe. We also tried professional handling when I worked abroad for 1 year – for us it did not work. But it can be useful for others.

The young Hanna (15 months)

Please let us know your attitude to usage of lacquers during the dog's preparation for an exhibition?
I never used lacquers, fortunately we never needed. The lacquer is not good for the coat, and the judge will see it right away, because it is sticky. The dogs also hate it because of the gas in the can. So many better – and more professional – product exist to prepare the coat…

Would you like to wish something to the Russian OES owners.
Good luck and try your best….
