OES in SPAIN

Interview with Yolanda Berdugo (kennel Big-Foot de Thalek)

1. How did the first OES appear in your life? Why was it specifically an OES? Please tell us a little about your first dogs.
Since I was a child I always wanted to own a dog. I was a girl who liked all kind of animals (horses, dogs, cats ...). I loved it and any time that I saw one I run to it.
I couldn’t to have a dog at home then. My mother didn’t like them. My older brothers never got to own one. After a lot of effort my youngster sister and me got that our parents agree to have one. It was a mouse hunter of white colour with a black head. After a year we got to have another one, a german shephard mixtured with collie, and we got to have a cat too!!
First  time  I  saw  a  bobtail  I  was  really very small.

Although I didn’t know whaat breed it was. After this, being older, I knew one called Bruno. I always stopped to salute it.
When I was to live with my husband we decided to adquire a dog, because my mother didn’t let me to bring my other two dogs with me because, as it must be, it was imposible for her didn’t love them. My husband, since a child, always liked bobtail. When a child he knew a bitch called Pepa who lived at his neighbourhood and arrived his dreamed breed.
So we haven’t many troubles to cose a breed. After meditated it we bought our Bobby. Bobby never was showed. He was a pet, a wonderful being, our grand champion!!
After to go to several dog shows we decided to adquire a quality bitch, as those botails that we had seen. We looked for several breeders and we got our Bosca (Wanda del Atico) A few time after we decided to get other bitch, our loved Thalek, but sadly she left us at four months old. I became very depressed, but thanks to Bobby and Bosca I could to come trhough. Our affix has her name in her memory.

When Bosca was 12 months old was showed for first time and got best junior and best of group. It was a great hapiness for a begginer and her career was unstopped since then. When Bosca was 14 monts old we adquired Thaila (Thaila de Larrywood) and that was the beginning....
After that we had our first litter and we kept a dog Thunder (Little Thunder of Big-Foot de Thalek) and a bitch Vampy (Vampy Girl of Big-Foot de Thalek).
After some years we decided import a dog with a well defined blood line called Neo (Reata’s I’m Big Foot), but again the bad luck wanted that we lost a loved being.
It was hard again to come trhough. Finally we decided try it again and we brouhgt London (Zottels Happily Ever After) and recently we brouht Shakira from America (Sparkling Bear’s Big-Foot de Thalek).
Now we have to work and we hope to write the history very soon...

2. What was the happiest moment in your life concerning OES?
We had much happy moments in our life. Each day is a happy moment.
I’d emphasize the arrive of a new OES at home, a new litter, seing the puppies growing, when they open their little eyes, whe they move the tail (or/and bottom), a ring show triumph... each minute is a happy moment with them.
For us the most important is living and enjoying them each day.

3. What is an exhibition for you?
First of all is a meeting place with friend, our favourite hobby. A place to chage opinions to others, to learn new things, to share experiences...
In a show a judge give you his valuation and it depends to all the effort and work did it before. But it’s only this, a valuation. For me the important is the valuatoin a many judges in many shows. This shows the continued work.

4. What should an ideal OES be?
For me an OES must be as the standar says: a well-balanced dog.
With a big head. Eyes with well pigmented and well dark. Short muzzle. Short body, with good shoulders, well leveled back, long neck, well rounded hind quarters and extraodinaries angulations. Coat of good texture. With a powerfull movement. Bitches very feminines and not bigs and dogs very masculines and not excessive bigs.
The most important is the whole dog. Then it must have that ‘somewhat’ that an OES has when you see it; that somewhat that captivate you and say you: ‘Yeah, look at me!!’; that what we called “glamour”.
And the most important, with a lovely temperament, nothing shy and good health.
I supousse that the ideal of any good breeder!!

5. What is you opinion about what had happened to the breed in your country for the last 10-15 years?
Well, in the breed have happened a bit of many differents things. Since good breeders that have disapperared to other many new breed enthusiasts that are raising the quality with good importations and extraordinaries matings. We all are ilusionated with improve the quality of OES in Spain to europe level. It’s a big challenge.
And the most important, this new enthusiasts are up to ítems very importants in the breed, as taking X-ray of hips in their specimens. The bobtail club (ACABE) is young and while it doesn’t control this arduous task it’s our obligation do it this and all the important small breeders that there are in Spain actually are doing this very well.

6. Would you like to say something to OES-lovers?
What more it could be said about this breed. Who own an OES know it well and who doesn’t own one I cheer him up to have one because onece an OES come into your life it’s impossible to live without him. And the most important is living the day by day, enjoying each moment, each detail because for us all goes round to them and they are the most important. ;-D
